Applying for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa? Here’s the Required Documentation to Prove You Are a Freelancer in Your Home Country

One of the most common sources of confusion —and a leading cause of application refusals— for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa / International Remote Worker Permit is the requirement to prove that the applicant is legally registered as a self-employed professional (freelancer) in their country of origin.

To be accepted by Spanish authorities, it is not enough to simply state that you work independently. You must submit official, verifiable documentation, duly apostilled and translated by a sworn translator (traductor-intérprete jurado) recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Below is a clear breakdown of what Spain actually requires 👇

Primary Required Document

Official Certificate of Registration as a Self-Employed Worker, properly:

  • Apostilled or legalized, and

  • Translated into Spanish by an official sworn translator recognized by the MAEC.

This document is the preferred and strongest proof of your independent professional activity.

🔄 What if your country does not have a freelance/self-employment registry?

Spain allows applicants to submit equivalent documentation, provided it demonstrates formal registration of an independent economic activity.

Accepted alternatives include:

  • Taxpayer registration certificate

  • Proof of enrolment in a self-employed or independent worker tax regime

  • Certificate of affiliation to the social security system for independent workers

  • Commercial licence or municipal permit authorizing economic activity

  • Registration with a Chamber of Commerce or similar body

  • Annual tax return indicating independent professional activity

  • Proof of tax payments (VAT, ISR, GST, etc.)

  • Registration in an economic activity census or one-person company registry

All documents must be apostilled or legalized, and the sworn translation must include the apostille/legalization as well.

🧩 Why This Matters

Submitting solid, consistent and properly authenticated documentation is essential to avoid delays or denials in the application for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa.
A well-prepared dossier greatly increases your chances of approval.
